PRAÇA MANUEL TEIXEIRA GOMES, Portimao

What's on in Portimão: concerts, festivals, exhibitions and markets across the municipality — from TEMPO – Municipal Theatre and Museu de Portimão to the nightlife of Praia da Rocha and the fishing quay of Alvor. Seasonal highlights include the Sardine Festival in August at the Riverside Zone, and the international races at Autódromo Internacional do Algarve (MotoGP in November, WorldSBK in March). Updated daily with what's happening today, this weekend and in the weeks ahead.

Main places

  • TEMPO – Municipal Theatre

Main hall for music, theatre and dance (389 seats in the main hall plus 125 in the studio space). Opened in 2008. Largo 1.º de Dezembro 34, in the historic centre.

  • Museu de Portimão

Former Feu Hermanos sardine cannery (19th century), winner of the Council of Europe Museum Prize 2010 — the most prestigious in European museology. Free entry on Sundays 10am–2pm. Rua Dom Carlos I.

  • Mercado Municipal

Fish straight from the auction house in the morning, fruit and themed weekend markets. Open Mon–Fri 7am–2pm and 5pm–8pm, Sat 7am–2pm (closed Sundays). Av. São João de Deus, by the Arade.

  • Marina de Portimão

620 berths between Forte de Santa Catarina and Forte de São João do Arade. Departures for the Benagil sea caves, dolphin watching and the Arade up to Silves from Cais Vasco da Gama.

  • Praia da Rocha

The urban beach — 2.4 km of clifftop boardwalk to Três Castelos, restaurants on the sand, nightlife on Av. Tomás Cabreira. Blue Flag for 38 consecutive years (since 1987).

  • Praia do Vau

Calmer alternative to Rocha, ~2 km west. Sheltered sea, summer first-aid post, own car park and amphibious chairs for reduced mobility. A solid choice for families.

  • Casa Manuel Teixeira Gomes

Birthplace of President of the Republic Manuel Teixeira Gomes (1860–1941). Now a free municipal cultural centre. Rua Júdice Biker 1, in the historic centre.

  • Autódromo Internacional do Algarve

In Mexilhoeira Grande, ~10 km northwest. 4.7 km circuit with 15 corners and sharp elevation changes — nicknamed the 'rollercoaster'. Hosts MotoGP in November and WorldSBK in March.

Good questions

Where can I park near Praia da Rocha in August?
Beachfront car parks fill up before 11am. Good alternatives: the Silo Auto on Rua António Feu (at the top of the cliff, 5 min walk down via the Forte de Santa Catarina staircase), the Hotel Algarve Casino car park, or higher up in the Old Town. The council has announced two panoramic lifts to connect the Old Town to the beach, but no construction date has been set.
When is the Portimão Sardine Festival?
The 30th edition runs from 30 July to 4 August 2026 in the Riverside Zone (Jardim 1.º de Dezembro / Cais Gil Eanes). Free entry. Cooking shows at 6pm and the Sardine Stage at 8.30pm. Grilled sardines are served outside the venue by partner restaurants — Dona Barca, Forte e Feio, Retiro do Peixe Assado, Peixarada, Ú Venâncio and Zizá.
Which beach in Portimão is best for kids?
Praia do Vau is the local consensus: sheltered sea (calmer than Rocha), summer first-aid post, own car park and amphibious chairs for reduced mobility. Blue Flag. For more infrastructure — restaurants on the sand and entertainment — Praia da Rocha is more developed, but it's busier and has stronger swell in August.
