What's on in Tavira: jazz concerts at the Palácio da Galeria gardens, the Verão em Tavira programme (July and August, 20+ years running) and the Festival de Gastronomia do Mar (April–May, across 27 restaurants in the council) — between the castle, the Igreja da Misericórdia (the Algarve's finest Renaissance building) and the eastern Ria Formosa. Seasonal highlights include the themed Rua do Cais fairs — Wine, Books, Crafts, Antiques and Stock — through July and August, and octopus lunches in Santa Luzia. Updated daily with what's happening today, this weekend and in the weeks ahead.

Main places

  • Castelo de Tavira + Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo

11th-century Moorish castle, rebuilt by King Dinis in 1292; free walled gardens with views over the town. Beside it, the 13th-century Igreja de Santa Maria, on the site of the former mosque — burial place of D. Paio Peres Correia, conqueror of Tavira in 1242, and the seven knights killed in battle.

  • Igreja da Misericórdia

Built between 1541 and 1551 to a design by André Pilarte, who also worked on the Jerónimos Monastery in Lisbon. Considered the Algarve's finest Renaissance building — sculpted façade and portal, 18th-century blue-and-white tile panels, and the 14 Works of Mercy. By the Porta de D. Manuel gate.

  • Camera Obscura (Torre de Tavira)

The town's former water tower (1931), converted in 2004 at the highest point of the Old Town. A camera obscura projects real-time images of Tavira onto a concave screen, with a live guide. ~30-min visit with a 360° viewing platform over the Gilão and Ria Formosa.

  • Ponte Romana (Roman Bridge)

Seven-arch pedestrian bridge over the Gilão River. Despite the name, it's medieval — rebuilt in 1655 and again in 1989 after a major flood. Connects Praça da República to the Forno quarter and the commercial streets on the north bank.

  • Praça da República

The heart of the town, on the Gilão by the Roman Bridge. Tourist office, café terraces, the riverside market and the summer ferry pier for Ilha de Tavira.

  • Ilha de Tavira / Praia do Barril

Reached from Pedras d'el Rei (Santa Luzia): cross the lagoon on a pedestrian footbridge, then take a 1 km tourist train along the old tuna-fishery rails (or walk). On arrival, the Cemetery of Anchors — over 200 anchors laid out on the sand, in memory of the tuna fishery active between 1841 and 1967.

  • Cabanas de Tavira

Fishing village that grew from 18th-century shacks for storing fishing gear. Today the whole waterfront is a pedestrian boardwalk lined with terraces; ferries cross to the Cabanas Island beach in 5 min (or you can walk at low tide).

  • Santa Luzia

The Algarve's Octopus Capital — traditional fishing with alcatruz (locally made clay pots) since 1927, descended from Phoenician technique. The waterfront is lined with octopus restaurants. Start of the Rota do Polvo boat tour through the Ria Formosa.

Good questions

How do I get to Praia do Barril, on Ilha de Tavira?
Drive to Pedras d'el Rei (Santa Luzia), cross the lagoon on a pedestrian footbridge and walk or take the 1 km tourist train along the old tuna-fishery rails (small return fare). On arrival you'll find the Cemetery of Anchors (200+ anchors laid out on the sand) and the former Arraial Ferreira Neto, now a small commercial area. Accessible beach with ramps, boardwalks and amphibious chairs all the way to the sand. Calm sea, no currents.
What summer fairs happen in Tavira?
The Verão em Tavira programme runs five themed fairs on Rua do Cais between July and August: Os Dias do Vinho (4 days in July, tastings from dozens of national producers), Book Fair (~18 days with guest authors), Crafts Fair (~9 days in August), Antiques Fair (~10 days in August) and Stock Fair (~4 days at the end of August). Alongside them: jazz at the Palácio da Galeria gardens, fado at the bandstand and summer dances.
Where to eat octopus in the Tavira area?
In Santa Luzia, 2 km from Tavira's centre — the Algarve's Octopus Capital since 1927, with traditional alcatruz pot fishing. The waterfront is full of restaurants specialising in octopus; Alcatruz is the one most cited by food critics. For lunch with the lagoon in front of you, just walk the parish promenade. Best times for octopus: end of May (Festival de Gastronomia do Mar) and end of August.
