What's on in Lagos: concerts at the Centro Cultural, historical re-enactments at Praça do Infante D. Henrique and parties in the Old Town — from the Baroque gilded interior of Igreja de Santo António, which survived the 1755 earthquake, to the Núcleo Museológico Rota da Escravatura, housed in the original Slave Market building. Seasonal highlights include the Festival dos Descobrimentos (biennial, late April / early May), with a historical parade, a 16th-century fair and over 2,000 period-costumed figures. Updated daily with what's happening today, this weekend and in the weeks ahead.
Centro Cultural de Lagos
Main hall with 275 seats and 500 m² of exhibition space across three rooms, plus an open-air courtyard. Music, theatre, dance and artist residencies. Rua Lançarote de Freitas 7, in the Old Town — a 5 min walk from Praça do Infante.
Igreja de Santo António
Baroque church completed in 1707, with gilded woodcarving that survived the 1755 earthquake, 18th-century blue-and-white azulejos and eight panels depicting the saint's miracles. The third most visited monument in the Algarve. Houses Museu Municipal Dr. José Formosinho.
Núcleo Museológico Rota da Escravatura
The former Slave Market, in the 17th-century Vedoria building — site of the first European slave market of the modern era from 1444 onwards. Part of UNESCO's Slave Route programme. Combined ticket with Santo António. Praça Infante D. Henrique.
Ponta da Piedade
Limestone headland south of the city, with a working lighthouse since 1913 (51 m above the Atlantic) and the famous 181-step staircase down to a sheltered cove. Visiting by land via the cliff-top boardwalk is free. Boat trips to the sea caves leave from the Marina and Praia da Batata.
Forte da Ponta da Bandeira
Bastion-style fort built between 1680 and 1690 to defend the quay — square plan, very thick artillery-era walls, moat with drawbridge. Now one of the venues of Museu de Lagos. Right by Avenida dos Descobrimentos.
Marina de Lagos
474 berths for vessels up to 30 m, on the Bensafrim estuary. The main departure point for boat trips to the Ponta da Piedade caves, dolphin watching and the Vicentina Coast (Cape St. Vincent is 17 nautical miles away).
Praia da Dona Ana
Cove sheltered by Ponta da Piedade — no strong swell, no currents, restaurants and beach service on the sand. The postcard beach of Lagos and the classic Portuguese-family pick. Reached by stairs from the cliff-top viewpoint.
Meia Praia
Continuous ~4.5 km stretch of sand connecting Lagos to the Alvor lagoon, flanked by the railway line (Meia Praia halt right by the sand) and the new boardwalks. Bigger swell than Dona Ana, but plenty of space even in August.
