BIRD WATCHING IN VALE DA LAMA

The Vale da Lama area is part of the Ria de Alvor, which constitutes the largest wetland in the Barlavento Algarvio, is included in the Natura 2000 Network and listed in the Ramsar Convention. Here, more than 300 bird species have been observed, but annually it is possible to observe about 180. In the estuary area, some wading species can be found, such as the Kentish Plover (Charadrius alexandrinus), and the Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus), which nest in the area. Throughout the year, it is possible to observe Herons, Spoonbills, and different species of Gulls. Recently, there has been a colony of Little Egret (Egretta garzetta) and Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) in this location. This action takes place in the protected area Ria da Alvor.
