The Exception and the Rule

The Exception and the Rule is a learning play that includes the fundamental characters of a merchant, a porter, and a guide on a journey through the desert.

During the journey, the merchant treats the porter with distrust and cruelty, exploiting him as much as possible and subjecting him to conditions close to slavery, ultimately killing him after a failed crossing of a river.

This is not just a story about a dominant merchant who kills a subordinate porter; it is the story of a society that reaches the point of deeming it reasonable for someone to be killed because, under a certain social order, their vulnerability has already been converted into guilt.

ColeTA – Algarve Theatrical Collective was born out of the desire to recognise and unite “theatre makers” who, in addition to contributing to the development of the performing arts in the Algarve, aspire to a more dignified exercise of their profession.

In 2023, we challenged Nuno Pino Custódio, resulting in “Quando a Sul o Azul Luar”, bringing together various interpreters and artistic structures from the Algarve.

Defending the implementation of a triennial creative activity, ColeTA will return in 2026, coordinated by Mákina de Cena, in co-production with ACTA – The Algarve Theatre Company, the Municipality of Lagoa and the Municipality of Lagos, with the support of the Municipality of Loulé.
