If you were here this week...
You'd feel the heat arrive in stages. Monday opens gently, 27°C on the coast and a breeze off the water. By Friday the coast is at 34°C and Silves is pushing 37 by Saturday afternoon, with no rain anywhere in the forecast and nights that hold at 20 to 22 degrees. Cicadas from midday, the smell of hot pine and grilled sardines by seven, and streets that stay awake until one in the morning because nobody wants to go indoors.
The calendar leans right into it. Silves closes its old Moorish streets for nine nights and turns itself back into Xilb, the poet city of al-Andalus. Santa Luzia throws its festival for the fishermen on the waterfront. Bensafrim fills a park with regional sweets and horses. Add fado in Portimão, a folklore night in Estômbar, Cape Verdean guitar in Olhão and a village near Albufeira that dresses entirely in white, and the week only really begins at sunset. Here is where we'd point you.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK
|
|
|
|
1. XXI Medieval Fair of Silves
Where: Old town, Silves When: Friday 7 to Saturday 15 August,
Why it's worth it: This is the biggest historical festival in the Algarve and the one event all year where a whole town commits completely. Silves shuts its medina and its arrabaldes to traffic, hangs the streets with banners, and repopulates them with market stalls, musicians, dancers, jugglers and characters in period dress. The Medieval Procession sets off at 6pm sharp every evening and winds up through the sandstone streets to the castle.

2. Traditional Festivals in Honor of the Fishermen
Where: Santa Luzia, Tavira When: Friday 7 to Monday 10 August
Why it's worth it: Santa Luzia is a single street of low white houses facing the Ria Formosa, and almost everything in it comes back to one animal. This is Portugal's octopus capital, and the stacks of clay pots you see piled along the quay are the traps, lowered onto the seabed and hauled up by the same families who have worked this water for generations. Once a year the village stops working and throws itself a festival in honour of the people who do it.

3. XXIII FETAAL, Fair of Traditions and Arts of the Algarve
Where: Bensafrim, Lagos municipality When: Friday 7 to Sunday 9 August
Why it's worth it: Twenty-three editions in, FETAAL is the western Algarve's answer to the question of what the region actually makes. The fair exists to put regional producers in front of people, and the sweets are the heart of it: fig and almond work, morgados, doces de amêndoa, the convent recipes that most visitors only ever meet in a packaged version. Alongside them come honey, cheese, liqueurs and craft from Lagos and municipalities across the region.
