Discovery Trail
Local tips
Reserve 2-3 days for the complete circuit — each stage ends in a village with a hostel. Contact the Discovery Centers in advance to confirm availability. This is probably the trail with the most hidden gem feel for active users in the Algarve. Spring is the best season, but autumn is also excellent.

Cabanas de Tavira
A tranquil and welcoming village by Ria Formosa, ideal for those seeking a calmer and more authentic Algarve. Cachopo
The northernmost and largest parish of Tavira (197.56 km2), located in the Serra do Caldeirao. A remote and traditional village with about 1000 permanent residents. Known for its cork oak groves, the annual Sausage Fair (January/February), and strong rural traditions: wool weaving, embroidered lace, honey, cork, wool, and cheese. The typical architecture includes single-story houses with schist walls, whitewashed facades, colorful railings, and Algarvean chimneys. The Via Algarviana passes through the village (Sector 5 starts here).

Ilha de Cabanas
Barrier island of Ria Formosa connected to the Cabanas area by a regular boat service, more discreet and less frequented than the neighboring Ilha de Tavira. The beach is extensive, with fine sand and clear waters, and the feeling of isolation is almost total. The lagoon side offers calm and warm waters, perfect for bathing with children.

Cachopo Museum
Museum inaugurated in 2000 in the former Casa dos Cantoneiros, featuring the exhibition 'Life in the Mountains'. It is part of the Municipal Museum of Tavira and is managed in partnership with the Parish Council of Cachopo. The exhibition is divided into three sections: 'Cachopo Through Time' (history of settlement), 'The Mountains and Life' (coexistence between humans and nature), and 'Work and Daily Life' (everyday life, domestic work, and crafts). An ethnographic focus that preserves and promotes the traditional culture of the mountains from prehistory to the present.
