The Foral of Porches of 1286. Diplomatic edition by João Costa

As part of the Commemorations of the 740th anniversary of the Foral of Porches (1286-2026), a presentation of the book The Foral of Porches of 1286. Diplomatic edition by João Costa will take place on 19 September at 7pm, at Casa da Chaminé in Porches, presented by Professor Luís Filipe Oliveira, and entry is free!

This year marks the 740th anniversary of the granting of the foral to Porches by King D. Dinis (1286-2026). Commemorating this date provides a particularly relevant opportunity to promote rigorous historical knowledge about the local community, strengthen the heritage identity of the parish of Porches, and highlight its place in regional and national history.

The Municipality of Lagoa in collaboration with the Parish Council of Porches will offer an extensive commemorative programme related to this historical milestone, which began on 20 August with the official opening of the celebrations and will continue until August 2027. Among other initiatives that will be officially announced, the diplomatic edition of the foral granted by Dinis in 1286, framed by a comprehensive historical study and complemented by the publication of relevant contemporary documentation by Dr João Costa, is set to be a cornerstone of this commemorative programme.

The launch of the book “Sources for the history of a medieval community. The Foral of Porches of 1286. Diplomatic edition”, authored by João Costa, will be presented by Luís Filipe Oliveira, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Algarve, and will take place in Porches, at Casa da Chaminé, on 19 September 2026, Saturday, at 7pm.
