Day 6 - Thursday PERSEPOLIS, Marjane Satrapi & Vincent Paronnaud, FR, 2007, 95’, M/12

It is the moving story of a girl growing up in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. It is through the eyes of the precocious and outgoing Marjane, 9 years old, that we see the hope of a people being destroyed as the fundamentalists take power, forcing women to wear the veil and sending thousands to prison. Intelligent and fearless, Marjane manages to evade the “social guards” and discovers punk, ABBA, and Iron Maiden. But when her uncle is brutally executed and bombs begin to fall on Tehran during the Iran/Iraq war, the daily fear that invades everyday life in Iran becomes palpable. As she grows up, Marjane's boldness becomes a constant source of concern for her parents, who fear for her safety. Thus, at 14, they make the difficult decision to send her to a school in Austria. Vulnerable and alone in a strange land, she has to face the typical challenges of teenagers. Moreover, Marjane is confused with religious fundamentalism and extremism, exactly the things she fled from in her country. Over time, she is accepted and even finds love, but as high school ends, she begins to feel lonely and homesick. Although this means having to wear the veil and live in a tyrannical society, Marjane decides to return to Iran to be closer to her family. After a difficult adjustment period, she enters an art school and gets married, although she continues to raise her voice against the hypocrisy she witnesses. At 24, she realizes that, despite being deeply Iranian, she cannot continue living in Iran. It is then that she makes the heart-wrenching decision to exchange her homeland for France, filled with optimism for the future, indelibly shaped by her past.
