The Municipal Museum of Faro (MMF), in partnership with the National Museum of Ancient Art (MNAA), presents the exhibition "Looking at the Landscape from the Collections of MNAA." Integrated into the MNAA is here program, the show proposes an artistic journey through five centuries of history. The exhibition intertwines a selection of ancient artworks from the MNAA collection with modernist expressions from the MMF collection. Iconic works of Portuguese art are featured, such as the celebrated Mês de Abril by Baltazar Gomes Figueira (1604-1674) and Josefa de Ayala (1630-1684), or the important canvas Leda and the Swan by Vieira Portuense, as well as works by prominent international artists like Joos de Momper II (1564-1635), represented with Porto de Mar, and the French master Jules Dupré (1811-1889), with River Landscape, among many others.
The idea of landscape implies a gaze that frames it, and visions of nature have always been expressions of the relationships between artists and the public with the space around them. Without intending to outline a linear evolution of landscape painting in European art, this exhibition attempts to account for how it has asserted itself as an autonomous genre, reflecting different sensibilities and ways of conceiving nature, architecture, and painting itself. It is an invitation to new perspectives, new dialogues, and a (re)discovery of the collections of both institutions.
Opening: May 30, 2026, at 16:00 at the Municipal Museum of Faro
