If you were here this week...
You would get one last blast of summer before it lets go. Tuesday touches 37 in Faro with a hot wind off the interior, then the heat breaks on Thursday and the weekend settles at 27 to 31, clear skies, no rain, and a sea still at 23 degrees. The best beach weather of the year, and almost nobody on the beach.
Because the Algarve has gone back to work, and this week it is making things. Sixty-eight artists in Olhão unlock their studio doors for three days. Loulé's park fills with the biggest vegan fair in the country. Guitars get played in a spring-fed park in Estômbar and inside a pottery in Porches, and Santo Estêvão opens the east's oldest autumn fair. Here is the week.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK

|
|
1. Open Ateliers Olhão
Where: Studios, shops and borrowed rooms across the centre of Olhão When: Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September
Why it's worth it: Last year twenty artists opened their doors. This year it is sixty-eight, forty-seven Portuguese and twenty-one international residents, all living in the municipality, working in painting, ceramics, photography, sculpture, illustration and street art. Thirty-two of them have no studio of their own, so the council has lent them empty shops and rooms in the old town for the weekend. You pick up the map and walk. The whole thing is on foot, between the cubist fishermen's houses that made Olhão a painters' town in the first place.

2. FAVA 2026: Algarve Environment and Vegan Fair
Where: Parque Municipal de Loulé When: Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September
Why it's worth it: FAVA is the largest vegan fair in Portugal and it has nothing to do with whether you are vegan. Seventh edition, more than a hundred exhibitors from twenty sectors, a hundred talks and workshops, and fourteen thousand square metres of the park laid out so you are always under a tree. The organisers expect to serve five thousand plant-based meals: francesinhas, pizzas, burgers, pastel de nata, ice cream, all of it without the animal, most of it from small Algarve producers.

3. 13th International Guitar Festival of Lagoa
Where: Quinta do Sol (Friday), Sítio das Fontes in Estômbar (Saturday), Olaria de Porches (Sunday) When: Friday 18 to Sunday 20 September
Why it's worth it: Thirteen years in, Lagoa's guitar festival has settled into a formula that works: one instrument, two acts a night, and a different room every time. This opening weekend is the best of it. Friday is the Greek guitarist Filippos Manoloudis with the Carreiro-Williams duo. Saturday moves to Sítio das Fontes, the park where the Algarve's biggest aquifer surfaces beside the Arade, for Duo Elipsis and Sebastián Cordero. Sunday is the Italian Francesco Buzzurro and a flute-and-guitar duo, played inside the Porches pottery.
