If you were here this week...
You would feel the week tip over. The heat has come off the top: 27 by day, 18 before sunrise, ten hours of sun and a sea still holding 23 degrees, warmer than the air at breakfast. The car parks empty from Monday morning. The calendar does the opposite, and it moves inland.
This is the weekend the Algarve celebrates on its rivers. Alcoutim puts three nights of concerts and fireworks on the Guadiana quay with the lights of Spain on the far bank, close enough to hear the echo. Portimão fills its riverfront with corn and Brazilian music, Lagos runs the oldest flamenco festival in Portugal for the twenty-third year, and half the villages in the hills have a festa of their own. 1. 73rd Alcoutim Festival
Where: Cais de Alcoutim, on the Guadiana, Alcoutim
When: Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September
Why it's worth it: Alcoutim has 2,500 people in the whole municipality and it is the furthest thing from the coast the Algarve has. Once a year it throws the party the numbers say it should not be able to throw. The stage goes up on the quay, the Guadiana is fifty metres wide at that point, and Sanlúcar de Guadiana sits lit up on the Spanish bank while the music plays. Everything is free.

2. 10th Corn Festival, Portimão
Where: Zona Ribeirinha, Portimão riverfront
When: Friday 11 to Sunday 13 September
Why it's worth it: The Festa do Milho is the largest Brazilian festival in the Algarve, and after ten editions it has stopped being a community event and become a city one. Corn is the excuse and the centre of it: pamonha steamed in the husk, curau, canjica, grilled cobs, all the things a Brazilian June festa is built on, transplanted to a Portuguese September and set down on the Arade riverfront.

3. 23rd Flamenco Festival, Lagos
Where: Centro Cultural de Lagos, Auditório Duval Pestana
When: Thursday 10 to Saturday 12 September
Why it's worth it: This is the oldest flamenco festival in Portugal, twenty-three years in the same small auditorium, and it has never grown into a stadium event because it was never trying to. Sixty minutes, one company, no support act. UNESCO listed flamenco as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2010, and this festival programmes it as heritage rather than as a floor show for the terraces.
