If you were here this week...
You would notice the light has moved. Early September drops the sun a few degrees lower and the whole coast turns gold an hour earlier than it did in August. Days are holding at 28, nights come down to 19, and the sea is at 23 degrees, warmer now than the air at breakfast. The beaches empty out from Monday morning. The calendar does the opposite.
This is the last big festival weekend of the summer, and all three of the region's heavyweights land on the same three days. Faro turns its walled old town into a music festival. Tavira spends four nights along the GilĂŁo celebrating the food heritage UNESCO put on a list. Albufeira lights the grills in the fishermen's square. Here is the week.

1. XII Mediterranean Diet Fair, Tavira
Where:Â Historic centre of Tavira
When:Â Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 September
Why it's worth it:Â Tavira is the community UNESCO chose to represent Portugal when the Mediterranean Diet was inscribed as Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2013, and once a year the town spends four days proving it earned that. The riverbank fills with a producers' market, tastings, showcooking, crafts, nutrition talks, guided walks and a garden of Mediterranean plants, and it is all free.

2. Festival F, Faro
Where:Â Vila Adentro and the streets of the old town
When:Â Thursday 3 to Saturday 5 September
Why it's worth it:Â Eleven editions in, Festival F has settled into a description it gave itself and then lived up to: the last great festival of the summer. What makes it different from every other festival on this coast is that it does not build a site. It takes over the city. Stages go up inside the medieval walls of Vila Adentro, in the cathedral square, in the streets and on the waterfront, and you walk between them past people eating dinner on their own doorstep.

3. 27th Fisherman's Festival, Albufeira
Where: Praça dos Pescadores, Albufeira old town
When:Â Friday 4 to Sunday 6 September
Why it's worth it: Albufeira spends the summer being the loudest place in the Algarve, and then in September it does this, which is the opposite. Running since 1997, the Festa dos Pescadores honours the men who still work the boats out of Fishermen's Beach, and the square below the old town fills with stalls run by local associations rather than caterers. Grilled horse mackerel, cuttlefish cooked in its own ink, clam stew, xarém, and trays of regional pastries, at prices that have nothing to do with the strip.
