If you were here this week...
You would smell figs. Late August is when the trees behind every old farmhouse start dropping fruit faster than anyone can pick it, and the smell sits in the warm air on the back roads: sweet, slightly fermented, unmistakable. Days are still holding at 28 degrees, nights are staying soft at 23, and three different towns have scheduled full moon nights on Thursday and Friday.
Then Saturday arrives and the whole region does the same thing at once. It is the 29th of August, the night the Algarve has always gone into the sea at midnight. Lagos and Praia da Luz throw a full day of it, Aljezur builds a municipal holiday around it, and out east a castle spends five days pretending it is 1350. Here is the week.

1. Medieval Days, Castro Marim
Where: Castelo de Castro Marim
When: Wednesday 26 to Sunday 30 August
Why it's worth it: Castro Marim is a small border town with an enormous castle, and once a year it uses it properly. For five days the village between the walls turns into a medieval market: fire breathers, jugglers, pipers, sword fights, contortionists, snake charmers, falconry displays, and Arabic and oriental dance in the old Moorish quarter. The "passa calles" groups move through the crowd rather than performing at it, so you keep walking into things.

2. Festa do Banho 29, Lagos and Praia da Luz
Where: Cais da Solaria and Jardim da Constituição, Lagos, plus two stages at Praia da Luz
When: Saturday 29 August
Why it's worth it: This is the oldest live tradition in the municipality. For generations, families from inland Lagos loaded picnic baskets onto donkeys and carts and travelled down to the coast for one night, to bathe in the sea on the 29th of August. The carts are gone, the ritual is not. It still ends with everyone in the water at midnight.

3. Roots Festival, Portimão
Where: Alameda da República, Portimão
When: Saturday 29 August
Why it's worth it: Portimão has one of the largest African and Brazilian communities in the Algarve and almost nothing in the summer calendar reflects that. Roots Festival is the exception. Organised by ESOSA, the African Association of the Algarve, it fills the Alameda with music from the PALOP countries and the diaspora, traditional dance and theatre, a crafts fair, and food stalls cooking things you will not find at a municipal festa.
