If you were here this week...
You'd notice the Algarve changing gear. July hands over to August, the coast settles around 30°C with nights that never really drop below 20, and the interior climbs into the mid-30s by mid-afternoon. Between one and five o'clock almost nothing moves. Then the light goes soft, shutters open, and the region starts its real day.
That handover brings the busiest run of the summer. Faro's Ria Formosa Festival turns thirty and lights up eleven nights of seafood and free concerts on the waterfront. Lagos fills the Praça do Infante with books, fado and folklore. Lagoa spends its final weekend spooning out convent sweets. Add a rural fair above Tavira, a village gathering deep in Alcoutim and jazz inside Loulé castle at eleven in the morning, and the only real problem is choosing. Here is where we'd point you.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK

|
|
|
1. 30th Ria Formosa Festival
Where: Faro waterfront When: Thursday 30 July to Sunday 9 August
Why it's worth it: Thirty editions in, this is the anchor of the Algarve summer calendar, and the organisers are calling this the biggest one yet. Eleven days of regional cooking built almost entirely around what comes out of the Ria Formosa that morning: clams, cockles, razor clams, oysters, whatever the boats brought in, cooked the way the people who catch it actually cook it.

2. Lagos Book Fair 2026
Where: Praça do Infante, Lagos When: Saturday 1 to Tuesday 11 August
Why it's worth it: Calling this a book fair undersells it. Lagos closes the square in front of the old fort, fills it with booksellers, authors and artisans, and then runs something different on the stage every single night: storytelling hours for children, book launches, open mic poetry, board games and chess tables, tango, folklore, and live music that spills into the streets around it.

3. Lagoa Conventual Sweet Show (22nd edition)
Where: Lagoa When: Wednesday 29 July to Sunday 2 August
Why it's worth it: Portugal's convents gave the country its sweet tooth, and the Algarve got the almond, fig and egg-yolk end of that inheritance. Lagoa rebuilds a conventual setting for five evenings and fills it with the real thing: morgados, Dom Rodrigos, fig and almond work, jams, honey, and classic drinks including medronho liqueur, made to recipes that predate the country's tourism industry by several centuries.
