If you were here this week...
You'd feel the roar of engines from the mountains to the coast.
This is no ordinary week in the Algarve. The bp Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal (the only European round of the World Rally-Raid Championship) arrives in full force. From Tuesday to Sunday, competitors race across Portugal's toughest terrain, culminating in a spectacular finish right here in Loulé on Saturday and Sunday.
It's the kind of event that puts the Algarve on the world motorsport map, with legendary drivers, roaring machines, and that raw rally energy that's hard to find anywhere else.
Beyond the rally, spring continues to bloom. Markets are bustling and temperatures are climbing into the comfortable 17-19°C range. Perfect for exploring.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK

|
1. bp Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal 2026
Where: Across Portugal, finishing in Loulé When: March 17-22 (Loulé stages: March 21-22)
Why it's worth it: This is world-class motorsport arriving in the Algarve. Part of the FIA-FIM World Rally-Raid Championship (the same series as the famous Dakar), this five-day adventure sees competitors navigate over 1,500km of challenging terrain across Portugal.
The finale happens right here: Stage 4 on Saturday (March 21) brings the convoy from Badajoz to Loulé, followed by Stage 5 on Sunday through the Algarve countryside, ending with the podium ceremony in Loulé.
💡 My take: Even if you're not a motorsport fan, the atmosphere of the bivouac (base camp) and the roar of rally trucks, bikes and cars is something else entirely. Free to watch from designated spectator points.

2. GeekSessionsConf 2026 — Tech Conference in Faro
Where: IPDJ Faro, Rua da PSP When: Saturday, March 21
Why it's worth it: The Algarve's tech community gathers for a day of talks, networking, and innovation. Organized by local groups including Algarve Tech Hub and GDG Faro, this conference brings developers, entrepreneurs and tech enthusiasts together, proof that the Algarve isn't just beaches and golf.
💡 My take: If you're in tech or curious about what's brewing beyond tourism in the Algarve, this is your scene. Community-driven with an accessible vibe.

3. 25th Portimão Photography Run Exhibition
Where: Museu de Portimão When: Until March 29
Why it's worth it: For 25 years, photographers have been capturing Portimão through their lenses in an annual "photography run", a creative race through the city's streets, markets, and waterfront. This exhibition celebrates a quarter-century of those images.
It's a window into how Portimão has changed (and what hasn't) over the decades — the fishermen, the river, the everyday moments that define a place.
💡 My take: A perfect rainy-day backup or a quieter alternative to the rally buzz. The museum itself, housed in a former cannery, is worth the visit alone.

Monchique's Mountain Taverns
While everyone follows the rally through the Algarve, consider the roads they won't take, the quiet curves up to Monchique.
This mountain town has been here since Roman times, drawn by the thermal springs below and the cork forests above. Today, it's where Algarvians go to escape the coast: for medronho (the local fruit brandy), for presunto (cured ham from black pigs), and for views that stretch all the way to the sea on clear days.
Stop at the weekly market if you're there on the second Friday, or simply wander the steep cobbled streets. Pop into a tavern for chouriço assado (grilled chorizo) and a glass of something local. On cooler evenings, you'll find fireplaces lit and locals debating football.
📍 Location: Monchique, 25 minutes from Portimão 🍷 Dont Miss: A glass of medronho at any local bar (but only one — it's strong!) 💡 Perfect for: Mountain lovers, food enthusiasts, anyone needing a break from the beach

The Rally Spirit: When Portugal Becomes a Racetrack
Rally-raid might seem like a modern adrenaline sport, but Portugal's love affair with motorsport runs deep. The country has hosted world championship rallies since 1973, and Portuguese fans are legendary for their passion. Often trekking to remote hillsides just to catch a glimpse of cars blasting through dust and gravel.
The bp Ultimate Rally-Raid Portugal is different from circuit racing. These are marathon machines: heavily modified trucks, cars, and motorcycles built to survive thousands of kilometres across any terrain. Think Dakar Rally, but in Europe.
What makes the Algarve special for this event is the variety: competitors cross from the plains of the Alentejo into the rolling hills and cork forests of the interior, finally reaching the coast. The Loulé finish brings this international spectacle to a place where you can walk to the bivouac, see the machines up close, and maybe catch a driver grabbing coffee at the same café as you.
That's the magic of rally-raid in Portugal — world-class competition that hasn't forgotten its roots in villages and back roads.

Small-Group 4-Hour Wine Tasting Tour
Spring is the perfect season to explore the Algarve's hidden wine country. This half-day tour takes you from Lagos into the rolling hills around Silves, where family-run vineyards have been producing wine for generations.
You'll visit a local winery, explore the production room and wooden barrel cellar, and taste three wines paired with a plate of regional tapas — local cheeses and cured sausages that bring out the best in each glass.
The tour includes free time to wander through Silves, the ancient Moorish capital of the Algarve. Climb to the castle walls for views over the orange groves, or grab a coffee in the quiet old town before heading back.
