If you were here this week...
You'd feel spring settling in for good.
The chocolate fair has packed up, but the Algarve hasn't slowed down. This week brings a beautiful mix of music, running, and the kind of cultural events that make March one of the best months to be here.
On Friday, Latin jazz takes over Lagos with "Caribe Libre" — Afro-Caribbean rhythms meeting jazz, exactly how Dizzy Gillespie intended. Saturday brings the weekly markets (Loulé and São Brás are calling), and Sunday features MOVE.Tavira, a charity run through one of the Algarve's prettiest towns.
Weather? Looking mild with temperatures around 16-18°C. A few clouds possible, but mostly pleasant spring conditions. Perfect for exploring.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK
|
|
|
|
1. Caribe Libre — Latin Jazz Night
Where: Lagos Cultural Centre — Duval Pestana Auditorium When: Friday, March 13
Why it's worth it: The Orquestra de Jazz do Algarve presents a vibrant programme dedicated to Latin music and its deep connections with jazz.
Featuring Raul Reys on vocals and Osvaldo Pegudo on percussion, this is a celebration of the Afro-Caribbean rhythms that Dizzy Gillespie brought into jazz and changed music forever.
💡 My take: Friday night, live jazz, Lagos. This is the kind of evening that reminds you why you're here. Arrive early for dinner in the old town.

2. MOVE.Tavira — Charity Run
Where: Praça da República, Tavira When: Sunday, March 15
Why it's worth it: The 18th edition of this popular walking and running event offers 5km and 10km routes through beautiful Tavira. More than just exercise, it's a cancer awareness initiative (March is Navy Blue Month for colon cancer prevention) that also celebrates International Women's Day.
💡 My take: Even if you're not running, come for the atmosphere. Tavira's historic centre makes a stunning backdrop, and the post-run energy is infectious.

3. Sounds at Twilight: Ibertrio
Where: Lagos Cultural Centre When: Saturday, March 14
Why it's worth it: This intimate classical music series continues with "Ibertrio", a piano trio featuring violin and cello. Part of the "Sounds at Twilight" programme that's been bringing quality chamber music to Lagos since January.
💡 My take: If Friday's jazz isn't your style, Saturday's classical trio offers a more refined evening out. Lagos Cultural Centre really has something for everyone this weekend.

Silves Castle & the Medieval Heart of the Algarve
While everyone heads to the coast, the red-walled castle of Silves watches over the Algarve's most underrated town. Once the Moorish capital of the region (yes, bigger than Faro), Silves still carries the weight of history in every cobblestone.
The castle itself is the best-preserved Moorish fortification in Portugal. Climb the walls for views that stretch to the Serra de Monchique, then lose yourself in the narrow streets below. The Cathedral (built on the site of a mosque), the Roman bridge, and the tiny cork museum all tell the story of a town that time hasn't forgotten.
Combine your visit with a "Jazz in the Wineries" session. The vineyards are just outside town, and you'll understand why this area was once the heart of the Algarve.
📍 Location: Silves, 20 minutes from Portimão. 🎟️ Castle entry: €2.80 (one of the Algarve's best bargains). 💡 Perfect for: History lovers, photographers, and anyone tired of beach crowds.

The Cork Revolution
You've probably noticed the cork products everywhere — bags, wallets, hats, even umbrellas. But did you know Portugal produces over half of the world's cork, and much of it comes from the hills behind the Algarve?
The cork oak (sobreiro) is Portugal's national tree, and harvesting it is an art passed down through generations. Workers strip the bark by hand every nine years, any more frequently would kill the tree. The red inner bark you see on recently harvested trees is the tree healing itself.
What started as wine stoppers has become a sustainability success story. Cork is renewable, biodegradable, and carbon-negative. Those trendy cork accessories? They're actually helping preserve one of Europe's most important ecosystems and the endangered Iberian lynx that calls it home.
Next time you're in Silves, stop by the small cork museum. It'll change how you see those forests forever.
