Let's Clean the Sea

On Saturday, 26 September, as part of the International Coastal Cleanup Day - Lagoa 2026 and integrated into the Blue Flag programme activities, the 3rd Underwater Cleanup will take place with the activity 🧹Let's Clean the Sea🌊, meeting at Praia Grande de Ferragudo at 09:00.

3rd Underwater Cleanup of the Algarve Marine Natural Park – Praia Grande

The International Coastal Cleanup Day is an international initiative that mobilises associations, citizen groups, public and private entities, companies, and other organisations in a joint action to raise awareness and intervene in the preservation of oceans and coastal areas.

In 2026, the Municipality of Lagoa aims to continue the initiative “Let's Clean the Sea”, promoting the 3rd Underwater Cleanup at Praia Grande.

The main purpose of this action is to contribute to the preservation of the marine ecosystem by removing waste from the seabed, while simultaneously raising community awareness about marine litter and the importance of protecting marine protected areas.

The initiative will take place in the morning, with a meeting point at Praia Grande de Ferragudo, and will involve divers with autonomous breathing apparatus, support teams, transport vessels, and waste collection entities with expertise in nature conservation, scientific research, maritime safety, and environmental education.

The activity will collaborate with ICNF – Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, CCMAR – Centre for Marine Sciences of the Algarve, Oceano Azul Foundation, National Maritime Authority / Port Captaincy of Portimão, Institute for Rescue at Sea, PORTISUB – Portimão Underwater Club, and ABAAE – Blue Flag Association for Environment and Education, among other entities to be confirmed.

In addition to the practical component of waste removal, the initiative aims to provide participants with a direct contact moment with the natural marine heritage of the Algarve, reinforcing knowledge about the importance of biodiversity conservation and adopting environmentally responsible behaviours.
