This symbolic event is organised by the Association «A Manta», starting at 11:00, marking the day when Saint John the Baptist was beheaded. The people from the Algarve mountains would descend to the coast with their pack animals to take a holy bath on the beach, believing it had healing effects.
Religious celebrations take place in the late afternoon, with a Solemn Mass at the Chapel of Manta Rota at 18:00, followed by a Procession in honour of Saint John the Baptist at 19:00.
Mónica Sintra is the musical highlight
The musical programme begins at 21:30 with an energetic performance by the duo Duo Reflexo.
At 22:30, singer Mónica Sintra, a prominent figure in Portuguese music, will return to Manta Rota with her greatest hits.
The festivities are organised by the Association «A Manta», the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, the Parish Council of Vila Nova de Cacela, and the Parish of Nossa Senhora da Assunção.
