After the success of the first edition, which attracted around 3200 visitors in 2025, the Portimão Museum is once again promoting the event "Prehistory by Moonlight - Summer Solstice" on June 21, from 7 PM to 12:30 AM, at the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar.
With free entry and a program that marks the arrival of Summer, the initiative invites visitors of all ages to participate in an original cultural experience that crosses archaeological heritage, music, science, art, and socializing, in one of the most important prehistoric sites in the Algarve.
Celebrated precisely on June 21, the Summer Solstice marks the beginning of a season associated with long nights, gatherings of people, and enjoyment of outdoor spaces. In this context, the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar become a privileged stage for a program that values heritage, promotes knowledge sharing, and brings the community closer to this space with over five thousand years of history.
Throughout the night, moments of discovery, learning, and leisure will be reserved, designed for different audiences and generations, reinforcing the connection between past and present through a diverse and accessible program.
After the success achieved in the previous edition, which gathered families, foreign residents, and astronomy enthusiasts, "Prehistory by Moonlight - Summer Solstice" returns to provide a unique experience in a location that, at nightfall, gains a unique and engaging atmosphere.
Showcase of local products introduces flavors from Mexilhoeira Grande.
The program begins with the reception of visitors in a relaxed late afternoon atmosphere, where the setting will be a unique sunset and where musical entertainment will be provided by a guest DJ, various enjoyment and relaxation areas, complemented by loungers, bean bags, tables, and chairs.
In a family visit or with friends, these relaxation areas are also an opportunity to appreciate local products that will be available in a showcase of arts and flavors from Mexilhoeira Grande. Local gastronomy, sweets, and handicrafts, along with a varied offering of drinks, where consumption is subject to payment, are some of the proposals not to be missed on this day.
Local distilleries will also be present with medronho liquor, regional liqueurs, and a gin produced in the parish. Crossing with the past of the Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar, craft beers will be available for tasting, one of which uses ingredients believed to have been used by prehistoric communities.
Adágio Coral Group performs composers from the Romantic period.
This night celebrating Summer will also be marked by the performance of the Adágio Coral Group from the Portimão Music Academy, which will present a choral and instrumental repertoire (piano) of composers from the Romantic period, in an intimate atmosphere.
The concert will enhance the architectural setting of the Megalithic Monuments by integrating elements.
