The month of June, marking the start of summer, brings back to Portimão moments of great animation, tradition, and socializing, with the parades of the Popular Marches and the Arraiais promoted by the local associative movement, in a true celebration of the Popular Saints, marked by dances, music, and much joy. In this 25th edition, tradition returns in full swing, with six parades of the Popular Marches distributed across the three parishes of the municipality, promising to infect residents and visitors with the shine of costumes, colorful arches, balloons, choreographies, and popular melodies that make these festivals one of the most emblematic moments of Portimão's cultural programming. This year, three cultural and recreational associations are participating: Sporting Glória ou Morte Portimonense, with 56 marchers; Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense, with 52 members; and CIRM – Clube de Instrução e Recreio Mexilhoeirense, with 50 participants. Also joining is the March of the Village of Alvor, organized by the Parish Council with the help of local volunteers, involving 59 marchers. For the first time, a social solidarity institution, CRACEP – Cooperativa de Reeducação e Apoio ao Cidadão Excepcional de Portimão, CRL, will also participate in the parades. With 42 participants, they will be present through choreographies specially prepared for this celebration, thus reinforcing the inclusive, community, and participatory character of the Popular Marches. The Portimão Arena, in the Fair and Exhibition Park, hosts the opening parade of the Popular Marches for the sixth time, in a free entry show, limited to the venue's capacity, which usually gathers hundreds of people among residents and tourists. The music will once again be provided by the Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense. The parades are scheduled to start at 9:30 PM and will take place at the Portimão Arena (June 4), at the Football Field in Mexilhoeira Grande (June 5), at Praia da Rocha, between the Miradouro and the Santa Catarina Fortress (June 12), in the Riverside Area of Alvor (June 19), at Praça 1.º de Maio (June 26), and in Montes de Alvor (June 28). The parade in Montes de Alvor deserves special mention as it is the only one held on a Sunday and represents the spirit of unity and dynamism of that community, serving as a starting point for the establishment of a local core dedicated to the regular celebration of popular festivals. The spirit of neighborliness will also be present, with the participation of the March of Odiáxere in the parade of the Riverside Area of Alvor. In total, about 500 participants will be involved, including marchers, musicians, choreographers, costume designers, and volunteers, in a true testament to the strength of local associations and the preservation of popular traditions linked to the sociocultural heritage of the region. The music of the traditional “Cavalinho” will once again be provided by the Banda da Sociedade Filarmónica Portimonense.
