The Carlos do Carmo Auditorium in Lagoa will host the play Frei Luís de Sousa, by Momento Artistas Independentes, with performances on 5 December at 19:00.
Written in 1843 and published the following year, Frei Luís de Sousa is considered the masterpiece of Portuguese romantic theatre. The play premiered in 1847 at the Teatro do Salitre and is inspired by the life of the 17th-century writer Frei Luís de Sousa (born D. Manuel de Sousa Coutinho).
Set against the backdrop of resistance to the Filipino rule: seven years after her husband, D. João de Portugal, was presumed dead in the battle of Alcácer Quibir, D. Madalena de Vilhena marries D. Manuel de Sousa Coutinho, with whom she has a daughter, Maria.
The family's happy existence is only disturbed by the ominous premonitions of an old servant, Telmo, who never ceases to believe in the return of his former master. In the famous Memoir to the Royal Conservatory, Almeida Garrett defines his work as “the truest literary and artistic expression of the civilisation of the century.
Tickets for this session cost €6 and are already on sale at Bilheteira Online, and at usual locations.
