If you were here this week...
You'd feel summer click into place: 30°C, a clean blue sky, and that first warm-evening hum when the whole region decides to eat outside. Down at Meia Praia in Lagos, sails snap in the afternoon breeze as Europe's best windsurfers race for a continental title, while in central Lagoa, the streets fill with the smell of showcooking and the sound of Fado as the Wine Show pours its first glass.
This is the start of the Santos Populares season, the Algarve's favourite month. São Brás lights its first Santo António arraial up in the hills, the markets are heavy with apricots and tomatoes, and basil pots are about to appear on every doorstep. Pour something cold and read on.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK
|
|
|
|
1. Lagoa Wine Show 2026
Where: Historic centre, Lagoa When: Friday 5 – Sunday 7 June
Why it's worth it: Five nights turn central Lagoa into one big open-air tasting room. Producers from across the Algarve and the rest of Portugal pour side by side, while showcooking stations send up the smell of grilled fish and the squares fill with live music.
💡 My take: Taste three Algarve whites before you eat, then grab a spot near the stage for Ana Bacalhau on Saturday. Free entry makes it the easiest night out this week.

2. European Windsurfing Championship
Where: Meia Praia, Lagos When: Sunday 7 June
Why it's worth it: The Formula Windsurfing Fin European Championship has taken over Meia Praia, and the long golden beach is the perfect grandstand. When the afternoon wind fills in, the racers launch in a wall of colour and carve the course at full tilt. Fast, loud, and surprisingly gripping even if you've never touched a board.
💡 My take: Wind is strongest mid-afternoon, so that's when to watch. Park at the marina end and walk down the sand toward the action.

3. Feast of Santo António — São Brás de Alportel
Where: São Romão, São Brás de Alportel When: This weekend
Why it's worth it: Forget the calendar, in the Algarve, summer really begins with the first Santo António arraial, and São Brás gets in early. Up in São Romão the church square fills with grilled sardines, manjerico basil pots, paper garlands and an accordion that doesn't stop until late. It's small, warm and entirely local — the opposite of a tourist event.

Albufeira Dolphin Watching — A Morning on Summer Water
With the coast warming up and the sea at its calmest, this is the season dolphins cruise close to shore and a small-boat trip from Albufeira is the easy way to meet them. You head out along the cliffs with a marine biologist aboard, scanning for the pods that pass within a few kilometres most summer mornings, with a swim stop built in if conditions allow.
