If you were here this week...
You'd be hearing the whir of wheels and the roar of crowds!
The Volta ao Algarve is in full swing, one of Europe's top early-season cycling races, and the entire region has transformed into a spectator's paradise. World-class cyclists including Portugal's own João Almeida are racing through our beautiful landscapes, and you can watch them for free from roadside villages, mountaintop finishes, and coastal roads.
The weather? Almost too perfect. Clear skies, temperatures around 14-16°C during the day, ideal for standing roadside with a coffee and cheering on the peloton.

Rua Vermelha – The Red Street
In the heart of an Algarvian village lies a street so distinctive it's become an Instagram secret: Rua Vermelha, painted entirely in a deep terracotta red.
The contrast of the crimson walls against white-trimmed windows, blue skies, and the occasional orange tree is absolutely striking. It's one of those places that makes you stop and just... look. No cafés, no tourists, no fuss. Just pure Algarve character.

💡 Insider tip: Perfect for a quick photo stop on your way to watch the cycling, or a Sunday afternoon explore.

Why the Algarve Loves Cycling
The Volta ao Algarve isn't just a race that happens here, it's the culmination of why the region has become Europe's winter training ground for professional cyclists.
Mild temperatures (even in February), quiet inland roads winding through orange groves and cork forests, challenging climbs like the Alto da Fóia (the Algarve's highest point at 902m), and coastal flats perfect for recovery rides... it's a cyclist's dream.
Throughout winter, you'll spot professional team buses parked outside village cafés, and pelotons of 30+ riders humming through the hills. The locals have embraced it, you'll find cycling-friendly cafés with bike racks and energy gels alongside the natas.
Fun Fact: The Serra de Monchique hills have been compared to the climbs of the Vuelta a España.
