Lidija Schrage and Monika Wildenburg - Looking Through the Past
What are we searching for? To relive wonderful moments? Or to feel pain again? To embrace the marks that endure? The warmth of a sensation that is only lived once in a lifetime?
Beware: there is also an undeniable fact - memory fades, details escape us, images lose their brightness or disappear completely. Distortions may arise, events may be entirely erased or overlap with others. Both in terms of colours and emotions.
In this exhibition, Monika Wildenburg and Lidija Schrage invite us to join them on a journey through their reflections.
LIDIA SCHRAGE, born in the Netherlands, translates these reflections through her raw and direct photographic language, using images that overlay multiple memories. She amplifies memory and transforms our perception, employing large surfaces of delicate fabric, cardboard, and lime-based paint, in small boxes or large-format photographs.
What do I see?
Lidija's secret desire is for each visitor to discover how their own perception may differ from others — in the way they see, feel, and remember the central message of each work. The works currently on display were mostly photographed in Cape Verde. Curious? Visit lidijaschrage.com
MONIKA WILDENBURG, born in Germany, began her artistic journey studying sculpture in Maastricht, Netherlands. Sculpture requires space — a physical space that she did not always have. From this necessity arose a fertile diversion: an in-depth exploration of painting and its effects on the surface. However, she would eventually return to three-dimensionality. It is this additional, decisive dimension that makes "real" for her more immediate and tangible. Although she often feels a strong urge to touch artworks when visiting exhibitions, she asks the public to experience her work only through the senses. For Monika, intellectual understanding has no place in art. On the contrary, art is not something to be understood or explained — it is something to be experienced. For her, art is: "Everything else!!"
