Infante D. Henrique (1394-1460) was a key figure in the Portuguese Maritime Discoveries of the 15th century. Taking advantage of the excellent geographical conditions and the experience of the locals, he made Lagos the main base for maritime voyages that helped discover new territories, peoples, cultures, and products. The then village of Lagos belonged to D. Henrique, who received his first burial here in 1460. Each year, a tribute is paid to this significant figure in Portuguese and world history through the laying of a wreath at the statue by Leopoldo de Almeida, followed by a mass in his honour.
