Fado returns to the Antiga Lota in Portimão, reaffirming this venue as a gathering place for celebrating Fado in the city. Starting from 5 September, the exhibition “What is Fado…” invites visitors to discover the history, sounds, and key figures of this major expression of Portuguese culture, while on Saturdays, “There’s Fado at the Lota” will once again bring together voices and instruments across generations around Fado.
The programme kicks off on 5 September at 19:00 with the inauguration of the exhibition “What is Fado…”, marking the 15th anniversary of Fado's inscription on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The inauguration will also feature a musical moment with fadistas Rita Raimundo and Inês Marques, accompanied by Vítor do Carmo on Portuguese guitar and António Correia on viola de fado.
Curated by Pedro Félix, who was part of the team responsible for Fado's UNESCO nomination, and in partnership with the Fado Museum, the exhibition offers a journey through the history, sounds, and key figures of Fado, highlighting memories, spaces, and performers linked to the history of Fado in Portimão.
The exhibition also collaborates with Eng. José Paulo Costa (STAP), who has been involved with “There’s Fado at the Lota” since its inception, sharing his specialised knowledge of the Fado and Portuguese guitar universe, and lending some guitars from his collection for the exhibition.
Entry is free, and the exhibition will be open until 16 October. From 5 to 15 September, it will be open daily from 17:00 to 23:00; from 16 September to 16 October, the hours will be from 10:00 to 12:00 and from 14:00 to 17:00.
The first night of “There’s Fado at the Lota” is on Saturday, 5 September at 21:00, featuring Rafael Pacheco & Guests to kick off this new edition. Every Saturday until 10 October, the Antiga Lota stage will once again gather different generations of performers, accompanied by some of the most recognised musicians in this field. The programme includes names such as Custódio Castelo and Ana Paula Martins, Teresa Viola and Pedro Viola, Ana Marques and João Leote, Adriana Marques and Hélder Coelho, Luana Velasques and Cecílio Santos.
