Exhibition "Walking Through the History of Fishing in Portimão"

Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes hosts, from July 28 to September 13, the exhibition "Walking Through the History of Fishing in Portimão", promoted by the Friends of the Portimão Museum Group (GAMP), in close collaboration with the Portimão Parish Council, the Portimão Museum, and the Municipality of Portimão. The inauguration will take place on July 28 at 7:30 PM, marking the start of a showcase that invites residents and visitors to learn about the evolution of fishing activities and their deep connection to the history and identity of Portimão.

Integrated into the "Walking Through History" project, this exhibition invites residents and visitors to revisit Portimão's strong connection to the Arade River and the Atlantic Ocean, through a visual journey that portrays the evolution of fishing activities and their determining role in the social, economic, cultural, and industrial identity of the city.

Throughout the exhibition, the public will learn about the transformation of the vessels used in sardine fishing, from the old oared galleons, through steam galleons that emerged after the Industrial Revolution, to the diesel-powered trawlers that still constitute the main fishing fleet of Portimão today.

The showcase also evokes one of the most significant moments in the city's port life: the unloading of fish at the old dock on the right bank of the Arade River, before this activity was permanently transferred to the facilities of Docapesca, on the left bank of the river, in 1987.

This is the 10th edition of the street exhibition project "Walking Through History", initiated by the Friends of the Portimão Museum Group in 2017. Through the installation of large-format photographs in public spaces, the initiative promotes community engagement with images that witness the historical and social evolution of Portimão, valuing local heritage and reinforcing the sense of identity and belonging.

More than an outdoor exhibition, "Walking Through the History of Fishing in Portimão" is an invitation to traverse the memories of a city deeply connected to the sea and the river, providing an informal journey through the history, experiences, and traditions that continue to shape the present of the municipality.
