Book in reading: NORMAL PEOPLE, by Sally Rooney Connell and Marianne grew up in the same small town in Ireland, but their similarities end there. At school, Connell is popular and well-liked by everyone, while Marianne is a loner who has learned through painful experiences to stay on the sidelines of her peers. When they have a lively conversation in Marianne's kitchen - difficult but electrifying - their lives begin to change. Normal People is a story of fascination, friendship, and mutual love, following the life of a couple trying to separate but ultimately realising they cannot. It shows us how complicated it is to change who we are. And, with astonishing sensitivity, it reveals how we learn about sex and power, the desire to hurt and be hurt, to love and be loved.
BIOGRAPHIES: Tânia Cavaco is a child psychiatrist at Portimão Hospital.
Raquel Vareda is a curious person who enjoys learning and conversing. She is also a specialist in Public Health, which gives her ample opportunities to do both. In a constant attempt to apply scientific evidence to our daily lives, she often finds herself with more questions than answers. She never tires of learning more about herself, others, and the world, and has always believed that books are an excellent opportunity to learn. But even better, books are also a starting point for conversation, debate, re-evaluation, and in the process, creating community. It was with this intention that she joined this Reading Club.
