Book in reading: THE CHILDREN ACT, by Ian McEwan This is a novel centered on Fiona Maye, a prominent Supreme Court judge who adjudicates family court cases. She is professionally successful, but not everything is going well for her. Alongside the latent remorse for never having had children, she faces a crisis in a marriage that has lasted thirty years. While she must confront a marriage where her relationship with her husband is crumbling, she is called to judge an urgent case. For religious reasons, a handsome seventeen-year-old boy, Adam, refuses medical treatment. Being Jehovah's Witnesses, both he and his family reject the transfusion. Should the secular court override sincerely lived faith? While seeking to make a decision, Fiona visits Adam in the hospital. This encounter has consequences for both, stirring feelings buried within her and awakening new emotions in him. It is a highly sensitive novel in which McEwan once again proves his mastery in writing about human nature and current themes that provoke reflection.
BIOGRAPHY: Raquel Vareda is a curious person who enjoys learning and conversing. She is also a specialist in Public Health, which gives her ample opportunities to do both. In a constant attempt to apply scientific evidence to our daily lives, she finds herself with more questions than answers. She never tires of learning more about herself, others, and the world, and has always believed that books are an excellent opportunity to learn. Even better, books are also a starting point for conversation, debate, reevaluation, and in the process, creating community. And it was with this intent that she joined this Reading Club.
