The Folklore and Ethnographic Group of Odiáxere was founded on March 17, 1984, and has since dedicated itself to the preservation, collection, and dissemination of the cultural traditions of its land.
Odiáxere is a rural village in the municipality of Lagos, located about 6 km from this ancient city, on the National Road 125, with Our Lady of the Conception as its patron saint. In the flowering months, the almond trees beautify the fields, creating stunning landscapes. This is a region that has historically lived mainly from agriculture and the harvesting of dry fruits — almonds, figs, carob — traditions that still persist. The proximity to the sea also meant that part of the population found sustenance in maritime activities.
Since its foundation, the Group has carried out valuable ethnographic work collecting dances, songs, costumes, and agricultural tools, with the aim of promoting the customs and traditions of the land. Among the dances it presents, highlights include circle dances, corridinhos, waltzes, and mazurkas, some dating back to quite ancient times. The group has a collection of traditional costumes, including: Farmers, Sunday-goers, Brides, Washerwomen, Bread Women, Fisherman's Helpers, Water Carriers, Carriers, and fieldwork costumes, some of which are faithful replicas. As an ethnographic complement, in its performances and parades, the Group presents agricultural tools associated with the harvesting of almonds and figs, the reaping, and the cultivation of the land. One of the highlights of its activity is the Folklore Festival, organized annually, which features the participation of renowned groups from all over the country.
The Folklore and Ethnographic Group of Odiáxere has taken its art and tradition to various stages from north to south of Portugal, participating in festivals, pilgrimages, television, and radio programs. Beyond borders, it has performed in Spain, France, and Italy. It is a full member of the Portuguese Folklore Federation and affiliated with INATEL.
