Astronomy in Summer: Skies We Keep – Looking to the Future

On August 1st, between 9:00 PM and 11:00 PM, the Municipal Park of Sítio das Fontes, in Estômbar, will host the activity 🔭Astronomy in Summer: Skies We Keep – Looking to the Future🌌, developed in partnership with the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve, promoting scientific dissemination and interest in astronomy within the community.

The initiative includes practical sessions of astronomical observation with telescopes and naked-eye viewing, allowing participants to identify constellations and characteristic asterisms of the summer sky, as well as observe the main celestial objects visible, such as the Moon, planets, stars, and other celestial bodies.

Images captured by the telescope can be viewed directly through the eyepiece by participants. Throughout the activity, collaborators from the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve will provide explanations and scientific comments, promoting a better understanding of the observed phenomena. Under the theme “Skies We Keep – Looking to the Future,” the activity raises awareness of the importance of preserving night skies as natural, scientific, and cultural heritage, alerting to the impacts of light pollution and environmental changes.

The records and observations made may be integrated into the educational archives of the Municipality of Lagoa, contributing to the appreciation of local scientific and cultural heritage and the creation of scientific memories for future generations.

The activity will take place in locations within the municipality suitable for astronomical observation and is aimed at the general public, including children, youth, adults, seniors, students, teachers, families, residents, and tourists. It is also an inclusive initiative, accessible to people with disabilities and/or reduced mobility.

The activity is intended for the general public, over 6 years old, and participation is free, with mandatory registration HERE.
