With Cristovão Campos, Nuno Lopes, and Rui Melo
Three friends, a white canvas, and an unexpected conflict: "Art" by Yasmina Reza premieres at Teatro Maria Matos in September, directed by António Pires and featuring Cristóvão Campos, Nuno Lopes, and Rui Melo.
The show is a sharp and surprising portrayal, infused with humour, about adult friendships, ego, and the difficulty of accepting differing viewpoints. A story of friendship shaken by something seemingly simple: the purchase of a completely white painting, with white stripes, signed by a renowned contemporary artist. Sérgio decides to buy the painting. Marco cannot hide his disbelief. Ivo attempts, without much success, to be the peacemaker. What could be just a difference in taste quickly transforms into a battle of egos, resentments, and hilarious revelations. Amidst laughter, silences, and tensions, the unpredictable side of friendship is revealed.
Since its premiere in Paris in 1994, "Art" has become an international phenomenon. From the friends' resistance to differing opinions on a very specific subject, "Art" paves the way for dialogue about acceptance of difference and the plurality of ways to see and feel art — and to look at and accept the world and others. A blank canvas serves as the starting point for a show that proposes an analysis of friendship and how we relate to one another. The strength and relevance of the text lie precisely in its timelessness: by addressing universal human issues — conflict, empathy, and the subjectivity of taste — it continues to resonate with audiences and foster reflection on these matters, always with plenty of laughter.
