The Exception and the Rule is presented as a learning play, featuring the fundamental characters of a merchant, a porter, and a guide on a journey through the desert. During the journey, the merchant treats the porter with suspicion and cruelty, exploiting him as much as possible and subjecting him to conditions close to slavery, ultimately killing him after a failed river crossing.

This is not just a story about a dominant merchant who kills a subordinate porter; it is the story of a society that reaches the point of considering it reasonable for someone to be killed because, under a certain social order, their vulnerability has already been converted into guilt.
