If you were here this week...
You would wake to a holiday Monday with a little rain in the air and the last night of Tavira's São Francisco Fair still to come. The showers are gone by Wednesday, and from Thursday the sky clears properly: 25 to 27 degrees, sun through the weekend, Saturday the warmest, the sea holding at 21.
And the week has a smell. In Santa Luzia it is octopus on the grill, four days of it along the waterfront. Up in Martim Longo it is woodsmoke and game stew at the Partridge Fair, with falcons flying at dawn. In between, seven magicians take over Lagoa and endurance cars howl around Portimão. Here is the week.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK
|
|
|
|
1. Haja Polvo: The Octopus Route
Where: Ten restaurants and bars in Santa Luzia, Tavira When: Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 October
Why it's worth it: Thursday is World Octopus Day, and the village that calls itself Portugal's octopus capital marks it the obvious way: by cooking. Ten places on the waterfront and in the streets behind it each put up their own octopus tapa, served small so you can try several. Each one costs between €5 and €8 with a drink.

2. XVII Partridge Fair
Where: Cerca da Chada, Martim Longo, Alcoutim When: Saturday 10 October and Sunday 11 October
Why it's worth it: This is the serra's own fair, about an hour inland from the eastern coast, and it is built around what people up there live from: hunting, goats, honey and cheese. Both days have cheese-making sessions, hand-milking demonstrations, game cookery (a masterclass on Saturday at 6pm, showcooking on Sunday at 3.30pm), dog shows, riding from 2pm and children's activities. Decoy carvers work in wood while you watch.

3. Lagoa Magic Fest
Where: Lagoa, Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, with the gala at the Auditório Carlos do Carmo, Lagoa When: 2 to 4 October, evenings
Why it's worth it: The Algarve's only international magic festival is in its sixth year, directed by the local magician Paulo Cabrita. For two days the magic comes to you: free shows on Thursday and Friday in streets, schools and care homes around the municipality, performed a metre from your nose.
