If you were here this week...
You'd feel the Algarve shift into its loudest gear of the year. The thermometer is climbing past 30°C, the tarmac shimmers by mid-afternoon, and the sea has finally turned that warm, swimmable blue. And down on Praia da Rocha, the sand itself is about to become a stage: Afro Nation, one of the biggest Afrobeats festivals on the planet, lands in Portimão this weekend and brings tens of thousands of people from across the world with it.
Away from the bass, the region leans into summer in gentler ways. In Lagos, food trucks line up under the trees for four free days of street food and live music. In Lagoa, the streets around an old convent glow with candles as artisans from dozens of cultures set out their stalls after dark. Evenings stay bright and soft past nine, the smell of grilled fish drifts from every other doorway, and the eastern islands sit there glittering, waiting for anyone willing to catch a ferry. Pace yourself: this is a weekend with more than one heartbeat.

2. Lagos Food Fest
Where: Jardim da Constituição, Lagos When: Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 July
Why it's worth it: Now in its 11th edition, the Lagos Food Fest gathers some of Portugal's most original food trucks in one shady garden in the heart of town. Food and wine is one of the things you ask us about most, and this is the easy, no-ticket way to eat your way around the country: regional petiscos, slow-cooked meats, vegetarian plates, sweet things and craft drinks, all served from noon until midnight with live music threaded through the afternoons and evenings.

3. Market of Cultures... by Candlelight
Where: Convent of São José, Lagoa When: Thursday 2 to Sunday 5 July · Free
Why it's worth it: Markets are the single most-requested thing in our reader survey, and this is one of the most atmospheric the Algarve has. For four nights, the old Convent of São José in Lagoa and the lanes around it are lit only by candlelight, while more than 60 artisans from cultures and religions around the world set out their crafts, flavours and traditions side by side. It is the 11th edition, and it has become a genuine summer fixture.
