If you were here this week...
You would start it under a grey sky, with Monday's showers rinsing the last of the summer dust off the streets. Then the sun comes back and stays: 25 to 28 degrees all week, warmest on Thursday, a breezier weekend with some cloud, and a sea still at 21.
Thursday is World Music Day, and the region takes it seriously: Mário Laginha and Manuela Azevedo in Loulé, the mandolinist Avi Avital in Faro, a Sakamoto tribute in Tavira. By the weekend, Olhão's riverside park turns into a free festival, Sagres fills with birdwatchers, and Alvor pours its own wines in the old fish market. Here is the week.

1. FÉRTIL Festival
Where: Parque Ribeirinho Poente, Olhão
When: Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 October
Why it's worth it: Fourth edition, and the first in its new home: the big riverside park at the west end of Olhão, where the lagoon opens up in front of you. FÉRTIL mixes things that rarely share a field. Talks on villages of the future and planting a food forest, workshops, films, a creative market, family activities, food, and at night proper concerts: Sensible Soccers on Saturday, Rossana on Sunday, with DJ sets around them.

2. Sagres Birdwatching & Nature Festival
Where: Sagres and the Cabo de São Vicente, Vila do Bispo
When: Friday 2 to Monday 5 October
Why it's worth it: Every autumn, thousands of birds heading for Africa funnel down to the last corner of Europe before crossing the sea. Eagles, vultures, storks and falcons ride the thermals over the cliffs, sometimes dozens at a time. The festival, now in its 17th year, is the biggest birdwatching event in Portugal, with 314 activities over four days: field trips, boat trips, ringing sessions where you see a bird up close before it is released, hikes, photography courses and dolphin watching.

3. Alvor Wine Tasting
Where: The old fish market, Alvor, Portimão
When: 2 to 4 October, evenings
Why it's worth it: Most people do not know Portimão makes wine. It does, and three estates show it here: Villa Alvor, Quinta da Penina and Arvad. For three evenings the old fish market on the estuary becomes a tasting room, with live music and plates from Zé Morgadinho, one of the village's classic kitchens, to go with the glasses.
