If you were here this week...
You'd hear the rumble of Porsche engines echoing through the hills above Portimão, feel the vibration as GT3s attack the famous elevation changes of the Autódromo Internacional, and understand why racing teams from across Europe call this their favourite circuit.
This is the Algarve finding its post-Easter groove, the spring air is warm but not hot, the markets are bursting with seasonal produce, and the tourists haven't quite arrived in force. In Loulé, the statue of Nossa Senhora da Piedade remains in the church, drawing pilgrims for quiet prayer before next week's dramatic procession.
Temperatures are sitting at a perfect 20-22°C, the beaches are inviting but uncrowded, and the inland villages are preparing for the wine festival that puts Albufeira on every oenophile's map. If you've been waiting for the perfect spring weekend, this is it.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK

|
|
|
1. Porsche Sports Cup Suisse
Where: Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, Portimão When: Saturday 11 April
Why it's worth it: Even if you're not a motorsport fanatic, there's something visceral about watching precision machinery attack one of Europe's most spectacular circuits. The Porsche Sports Cup Suisse brings together GT3 Cup, GT4 Clubsport, Open GT and Classic categories, a mix of cutting-edge engineering and vintage elegance.
The Autódromo itself is worth visiting: its rollercoaster layout offers dramatic elevation changes that drivers describe as "like no other circuit." Pack a picnic, bring sunscreen, and prepare for an unexpectedly thrilling day.
💡 My take: The sound of these cars echoing across the hillsides is something you need to experience at least once. Perfect for a different kind of Algarve Saturday.

2. Sand City — World's Largest Sand Sculpture Festival
Where: Pêra, Lagoa (EN125) When: Daily, 10:00-22:00
Why it's worth it: Now in its 20th year, Sand City features 120 massive sand sculptures across 5 hectares, think Michelangelo's David but made entirely of compressed sand. This year's theme showcases world landmarks and cultural icons, each one taking master sculptors weeks to complete.
The evening visits are magical: sculptures illuminated against the night sky transform the experience entirely. There's also a playground, café, and artisan market on site.
💡 My take: The scale is genuinely astonishing. Perfect for families, but fascinating for anyone who appreciates artistic skill.

3. Mãe Soberana — Loulé's Most Sacred Tradition
Where: Igreja de São Francisco, Loulé When: Until April 16
Why it's worth it: The statue of Nossa Senhora da Piedade remains in the parish church until April 16, drawing pilgrims from across Portugal for quiet devotion. This is one of the Algarve's most significant religious traditions, building toward the Festa Pequena on April 17 when the statue will be carried through streets lined with thousands.
Even if you're not religious, witnessing this tradition offers a window into Algarvian culture that few tourists ever see.
💡 My take: The atmosphere in the church is genuinely moving. Elderly women lighting candles, families bringing children to pay respect, the scent of incense and flowers.

Estoi Palace & Gardens — Free Roman Beauty
While you're at the Sunday market in Estoi, take 15 minutes to explore one of the Algarve's most overlooked treasures: the Palácio de Estoi.
This 19th-century rococo palace (now a pousada) has gardens you can wander for free. Think azulejo-lined terraces, palm trees, statuary, and sweeping views across the countryside. It feels like stumbling into a forgotten corner of Sintra.
Just down the road are the Roman ruins of Milreu, a glimpse into the Algarve's ancient past. The mosaic-lined baths and temple foundations remind you that people have been drawn to this gentle climate for millennia.
📍 Location: Estoi, 10km north of Faro 💰 Cost: Gardens free / Milreu ruins €3 💡 Perfect for: Sunday morning exploration after the market

Why Porsche Chose Portimão
When the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve opened in 2008, many wondered if a world-class racing circuit in the hills above Portimão made sense. Today, the question seems almost quaint.
The circuit has hosted Formula 1, MotoGP, and the world's top motorsport championships. Its secret? That stunning topography. Built into the Algarve's rolling terrain, the track rises and falls dramatically creating blind crests and challenging elevation changes that drivers describe as "like no other circuit."
But the appeal goes beyond the tarmac. Teams love the 300+ days of sunshine for testing. Drivers love the nearby beaches for unwinding. And the Algarve has quietly become Europe's motorsport winter playground, with teams from across the continent arriving each year to prepare for their seasons.
This Saturday, the Porsche Sports Cup Suisse brings that world to your doorstep, a reminder that the Algarve isn't just beaches and golf.

✨ PREMIUM PICK OF THE WEEK

Springtime in the Algarve Mountains — Off-Road Safari
If you want a premium coastal plan this week, this Ria Formosa boat experience is a strong choice: island-hopping, protected lagoon scenery, and a full day focused on the eastern Algarve’s natural side.
It’s a very different mood from the market/city plans. Slower, water-based, and ideal if you want one memorable outdoor day instead of many short stops.
