If you were here this week...
You'd feel the rumble of engines echoing from coast to mountains, again.
Just when you thought the motorsport season was winding down after last week's Rally-Raid finale, the Algarve roars back to life. This weekend, the FIM World Superbike Championship returns to the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, turning Portimão's famous "rollercoaster" circuit into a battleground of speed and skill.
But it's not all about engines. Portimão Arena transforms into an urban playground for the Fusion Fest, where skate, BMX and music collide. And down the coast in Quarteira, elite triathletes dive into the Europe Triathlon Cup.
Spring has well and truly arrived. Temperatures are climbing into the low 20s, almond blossoms have given way to orange blossom scent, and the beaches are calling. This is the Algarve at its sweetest.

🎯 TOP 3 EVENTS OF THE WEEK
|
|
|
|
1. FIM WorldSBK Championship 2026
Where: Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, Portimão When: Friday 27 – Sunday 29 March
Why it's worth it: The World Superbike Championship is one of the most spectacular motorsport series on the planet, and the Algarve circuit is a fan favourite. Known for its dramatic elevation changes (nearly 50 metres across the lap), this track rewards bravery and punishes mistakes.
Friday brings practice sessions, Saturday sees qualifying plus the first race, and Sunday delivers two more races to decide the round. Expect close battles, last-lap drama, and the kind of atmosphere only a world championship can bring.
💡 My take: Even if you've never watched superbike racing, the sound of those machines attacking Turn 1 is unforgettable. General admission gives great views; paddock tickets offer a glimpse behind the scenes.

2. Fusion Fest 2026
Where: Portimão Arena When: Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 March
Why it's worth it: Where else can you watch BMX and skateboard competitions, catch a hip-hop concert, and discover emerging artists all in one weekend? Fusion Fest is the Algarve's answer to urban culture festivals, bringing together action sports and music under one roof.
This year's lineup includes Mundo Segundo and Sam The Kid — two names that need no introduction in Portuguese hip-hop. Between sets, local and national skaters and BMX riders compete for prizes and glory.
💡 My take: Perfect for families with teens or anyone who wants something different from the usual weekend agenda. The vibe is young, energetic, and refreshingly unpretentious.

3. Europe Triathlon Cup Quarteira
Where: Quarteira, waterfront When: Saturday 28 – Sunday 29 March
Why it's worth it: Quarteira has hosted European triathlon events for years, and this spring edition brings elite and junior athletes from across the continent. The course showcases the best of the Algarve coast: a sea swim in crystal-clear waters, a fast bike circuit, and a run along the beachfront promenade.
Free to watch from the seafront, it's inspiring stuff, and a reminder of why so many athletes choose the Algarve as their training base.
💡 My take: Even if you're not into sports, watching athletes push their limits against the backdrop of Quarteira's beaches is worth the trip. Bring a coffee, find a spot on the promenade, and cheer them on.

Alte: The Village Time Forgot
While the coast buzzes with motorsport and urban festivals, consider a detour inland to Alte, often called the most picturesque village in the Algarve.
Tucked into the hills of the Barrocal (the middle belt between coast and mountains), Alte feels like stepping into another era. Whitewashed houses cascade down narrow streets, springs bubble up from the rock, and the only soundtrack is birdsong and the occasional church bell.
The Fonte Grande (Great Spring) is the heart of the village, a natural pool fed by fresh water that's been refreshing locals for centuries. In spring, the surrounding hills are carpeted with wildflowers, and the air carries the scent of orange blossom from the groves below.
Stop at one of the small cafés for a bica (espresso) and a slice of almond tart. Wander to the old water mill. Let the quiet settle in. This is the Algarve your guidebook forgot to mention.
📍 Location: Alte, 25 minutes from Albufeira 🍷 Dont Miss: Fonte Grande natural springs and the Igreja Matriz 💡 Perfect for: Photography lovers, nature seekers, anyone craving authentic Portugal

The Legend of the Fonte Grande
Every Algarve village has its stories, but Alte's might be the most magical.
Legend says that centuries ago, a Moorish princess named Alteia lived in these hills. When Christian forces arrived during the Reconquista, she refused to convert and was imprisoned. But her tears, flowing with grief for her lost love and homeland, were so pure that they formed a spring, the Fonte Grande that still flows today.
Whether you believe in legends or not, the water is real: cold, crystal clear, and impossibly refreshing on a warm day. Locals still fill bottles here, trusting in water that's been quenching thirsts since before Portugal was Portugal.
The village embraced this heritage, building a small recreational area around the springs where families picnic in summer and couples stroll year-round. It's a reminder that in the Algarve, history isn't locked away in museums, it bubbles up from the ground beneath your feet.
